Custom Djinn Rule

Players have 7 gold. Each day, an ability is auctioned; highest unique bidder gains it until dawn, even if dead. Bids are secret & not returned (bar evil ties).

Description

A humble merchant has come to peddle their wares at the very same time an evil Demon haunts your village. Can capitalism save these townsfolk? Or will they succumb to the foibles of greed?

Lots of fun, either, you start knowing, or once per game roles, that typically, on their own, would not be enough to solve the game. However, with the opportunity to continue accruing abilities, could they be enough to figure out how to kill the Demon?

Spreadsheet for Tracking Bids

Want to run a game of Buyer's Remorse but worried about keeping track of the gold? Use this handy dandy spreadsheet that'll do the work for you!

Steps: 1) Open the link, it'll automatically ask you to create your own copy of the sheet. 2) On the first page, enter the names of your players in the order they are sat. 3) Once tokens are passed out, check the boxes for your evil team. 4) Enter the bids as they come in onto the sheet. Use the row that says "Ability X" to mark what ability you're giving out.

The sheet will automatically flag who won the item (IN GREEN), using the highest unique rule. It'll also flag any evil player who tied (IN RED) so you can let them know they got their gold back, using the (bar evil ties) rule. The sheet keeps track of everyone's balance for you and lets you know when they run out of gold (IN GREY). Once you're done with the game, feel free to use the next tab "Game 2" and "Game 3" for your next games, or just clear out the bets! It's that simple.

Enjoy!

p.s. if the evil team changes (snake charms, auctioned off mez/ogre, some other ability), just add the player's name into the bottom table on the day they became evil. This will start keeping track of when you need to return their gold for when they tie. p.p.s. thank you megan (vanillascrewdriver) for making this for me i love you forever

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Format is completely up to the ST for how auctions should be run. I've done top of the day, announce the item, take bids throughout the day, then let the winner know secretly prior to nominations. I've seen before nominations the item is announced so no private chat about the actual ability occurs. As long as an auction starts and ends once per day, that's satisfying the Djinn.

  2. Lots of questions can be answered with "The ability comes from the Djinn." The Djinn cannot be drunk or poisoned so the ability is considered sober at all times, even if the player becomes drunk or poisoned. Additionally, they can be executed or die that night, but still use the Djinn granted ability.

  3. Players cannot share gold nor can they bid in smaller increments than 1 gold. .5 gold is NOT allowed!

  4. The ability does not necessarily need to be on-script. All the Djinn says is "an ability", go wild!

  5. Abilities can persist past the dawn, but they are no longer possessed by that player that won it. If you auction the Sweetheart ability, and that player dies that night, a player does stay drunk for the rest of the game. If you auction a Witch ability, the player cursed by the Witch will still die if they nominate. If you auction an Artist ability, that player must use it before the night phase, or they lose their chance.

  6. Djinn granted abilities do not change a player's token. So if you auction a Snake Charmer ability and the Chef wins it and they pick the Imp, the Imp becomes a poisoned, good Chef and the previous Chef becomes an evil Imp. If the Dreamer were to pick the Chef who won the Snake Charmer ability, the good ability they'd see is the Chef token. The ability won from the auction is provided by the Djinn from the moment they win it to the next dawn. The Djinn grants the ability to any player that wins it, no matter if they are drunk, poisoned, or dead. Gold cannot be split, exchanged, or shared. The only time a player can receive their gold back is if they are evil and they bid the same amount as another player.

  7. Grim Peekers should only be able to see established reminder tokens that would be on a Clocktower Grim. If you want to use reminder tokens to keep track of the Gold, you should not have those in view for any Grim Peekers.

  8. How does the highest, unique bidding work and (bar evil ties)?

Good player 1 submits 7 gold Good player 2 submits 7 gold Evil player 1 submits 7 gold -- Good player 3 submits 6 gold -- Good player 4 submits 5 gold Evil player 2 submits 5 gold -- Evil player 3 submits 4 gold

Good players 1, 2, 3, 4 all lose the gold they bid Evil players 1, 2 get their gold back (they tied) Evil player 3 loses their gold Good player 3 wins the item as they were the highest, unique bid.
